President’s Letter

Dear Akron Area SHRM Chapter Members,

    Exhausting. Lost. Chaotic.

These are the top three words used to describe 2020 in a Washington Post poll of over 2000 readers.

We have and are still facing a pandemic, a contentious political climate, and strong calls to action against rooted racial inequalities.

These are tough burdens to carry by themselves, let alone all at once. We have to be aware that these burdens are wearing down our families, our neighbors, our employees, and likely ourselves.

In problematic times, I’m always reminded of Mr. Rogers. Yes, the guy with the sweaters from PBS. Fred had a knack for leaving great bits of wisdom for times like this.  He spent a lot of time talking about kindness and valuing differences and showing up when most people won’t be inclined to do so. He once said:

“There is no normal life that is free of pain. It's the very wrestling with our problems that can be the impetus for our growth."

No doubt, these are painful times. Everyone is wrestling with trying to find a light at the end of their proverbial tunnel. All I can think to myself is what a time to be able to show up!

What a time for us as HR Professionals, Business Leaders, Volunteers, Neighbors, and Citizens to make an impact, improve our systems or environments, and get in the ring and wrestle alongside those who need the support. Through that wrestling we grow and how great it is when we can grow together.

Our mission at Akron Area SHRM is “Enhancing our organizations, our professions, ourselves.” As we approach 2021, we look to continue our tradition of building a network that offers opportunities to connect, grow, and lead. We will continue to provide monthly meetings for professional development, networking events, recertification opportunities related to your SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, and opportunities to lead through volunteer board positions. This year we will also provide community based, action oriented diversity, equity, and inclusion events to develop our members to face the challenges in our workplace. We are excited about these initiatives and sharing the great work that we are accomplishing as a SHRM affiliate chapter.

All we need now is YOU! We ask that you join us as we learn, lead, and face these challenges together.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve Akron SHRM and work alongside the AMAZING group of individuals who make up our board.

Wishing you a safe and joy filled 2021!

    Chadwick Klein, SHRM-SCP
