As SHRM tells us, there are many signs of unconscious and conscious bias happening in the workplace, but the signs can be very subtle. It may come in the form of exclusion, unfair practices, off-color jokes, stereotyping commentary, and just general unfair and unkind treatment of others. These are microaggressions.
The Oxford dictionary defines microaggression as “a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.” In this month’s Pushing the Envelope Roundtable conversation, we’re going to ask all participants to review the videos in advance, then discuss the relationship between these issues, and give every participant an opportunity to discover their own biases!
Take the Implicit Bias Test (~15 mins): Project Implicit (harvard.edu)
Implicit Bias (12 mins): We all have implicit biases. So what can we do about it? | Dushaw Hockett | TEDxMidAtlanticSalon - YouTube
Microaggressions (6 mins): Race Card | Watch The Series | What I Hear When You Say (pbs.org)
We will:
- Identify our own unconscious bias
- Discuss how we have each experienced this
- Unlock our responsibility as leaders to recognize and stop microaggressions in our workplaces and communities
Come join us for open and candid conversation about moving the needle in our quest for diversity, equity and inclusion!
