AASHRM 2020 Workforce Readiness Initiative: Structured and Virtual Interview Workshop
In February, Scott Bible, SHRM-SCP and Erin Makarius, PhD and SHRM-SCP from the University of Akron will present a workshop for HR managers to update their interview processes to ensure that it is as reliable and valid as possible. This will aid in efforts to be inclusive and avoid adverse impact. In addition to a hands-on workshop to develop structured interviews, the session will highlight virtual interviews and how to make them more effective.
The most common ways that organizations assess and measure an applicant’s skills are through resume screening and unstructured interviews. These can be efficient, but they can also be the least reliable and valid way to predict job performance.
Typical Unstructured Interview
- Relatively unplanned and “quick and dirty”
- Questions based on interviewer “hunches” or “pet questions” to assess applicants
- Casual, open-ended, or subjective questions
- “Tell me about yourself…”
- Often contains obtuse questions
- “If you were an animal…”
- Often contains highly speculative questions
- “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?”
Typical Structured Interview
- Questions based on job analysis
- Same questions asked of each candidate
- Response to each question numerically evaluated
- Detailed anchored rating scales may be used to score each response
- Detailed notes taken, focusing on interviewees’ behaviors
This session will guide participants in creating more structured interviews and will present the advantages and disadvantages of taking interviews virtual.
